MUSIC BOX DOLL (short dress)

LINING
DRESS LINING (lining fabric): Cut 1 rectangle 6 in. high x 26 in. wide
LINING: Press under 1/4 in. along lower edge of long side of lining. Topstitch to hold in place. With right sides of fabric together, sew center back seam (short sides of lining rectangle) from lower edge up 5 in. Press seam allowances open along entire center back. Topstitch opening to hold in place. Sew 2 rows of gathering stitches 1/4 in. and 1/8 in. from top edge. Pull gathers in to measure 8-1/2 in. Tie gathering threads to hold gathers in place and further secure by zigzagging over the gathers. Cut two 3-1/2-in. pieces of 1/4-in.-wide ribbon for shoulder straps. Using bodice measuring strip (pattern piece #5) as a guide, transfer markings for the straps to wrong side of gathered edge of lining. Pin 1 end of each strap to each spot. Try dress on doll and check fit and height of straps on doll. Tack straps in place. Note: final hem will be stitched after petals are in place to allow for variation in construction.

DRESS
PATTERN PIECES (pink fabric):
   #1 Shoulder Petal-cut 4
   #2 Short Petal-cut 6
   #3 Medium Petal- Cut 6
#5 Bodice measuring strip-for reference only

Hint: for smooth satin stitch edges on petals (if using a fabric that has a nap, like sueded rayon) cut all petals in the same direction. You may want to cut fabric in a single layer, with stabilizer behind it, to keep fabric from shifting.

Note: Use a stabilizer under fabric when sewing - either typing paper or a specialty product sold in fabric stores. To economize on stabilizer, cut and make large petals first. Use the same piece of stabilizer to make medium petals. Experiment with threads used in machine embroidery such as Sulky™ brand. They are designed to fill in a satin stitch better than regular thread. Ask your sewing machine dealer about special needles with an elongated eye for embroidery threads. Be patient. Find the speed your machine does its best satin stitch and don’t be tempted to speed away. If your machine has a hard time making a clean satin stitch at fabric edges, lengthen stitch slightly to make it feed more easily.

PETAL CONSTRUCTION
Place stabilizer underneath petal. Satin stitch around outer curved edges only of each petal. Do not satin stitch across top edges. Use Fray Check™ if desired across petal tops. Carefully remove stabilizer from each petal. Fold leaves of all short and medium petals according to patterns. Baste across straight edges of petals. Short petals should measure 1-3/8 in. across top edge. Medium petals should measure 1-5/8 in across top edge. Large petals (used on clutter cover) should measure 2 in. across top edge.

SHOULDER PETALS
* Fold top edge of one shoulder petal into a pleat by folding at point “A” and matching point “A” to point “B”. Reverse pleat direction for second shoulder petal so you end up with the pleats facing in the opposite directions. With right sides of fabric together, sew the two petals together 1/4 in. from top edge for shoulder seam. Press seam allowance towards back. Repeat from * for second shoulder piece. With wrong side of shoulder piece to right side of strap, and folds of pleats towards armhole edge of dress lining, attach shoulder petals to shoulder strap by stitching seam allowance only to strap. Repeat for other shoulder.

ATTACHING SKIRT PETALS
Pin 6 medium petals around top edge of lining using pattern piece #5 as a guide, matching folds of pleats with marks on measuring strip. Petals will extend beyond center back edge. Hand baste through all layers. Using pattern piece #5 for a guide, pin 6 short petals on top of medium petals. Top stitch through all layers, ending at center back edges. Zigzag across raw edges of petals thorough all layers and lining. Turn under hem lining, making sure lining doesn’t show below petals. Sew hem.

DRESS FINISHING
(For short dress only, insert music box into back cavity of doll.) Sew snaps (as marked on pattern piece #5) to upper left and right back opening of dress lining, lapping left over right, leaving shoulder petals free. Place dress on doll. Adjust shoulder petals so they overlap at the center front of the dress and tack in place. Tack shoulder petals to dress lining at underarm.

Cut a 20-in. piece of 1/4-in. ribbon and fold in half to mark center. Place center of ribbon on center front dress (even with top edge of lining) and tack. Bring ribbon around to center back, taking at underarms and side seams. Tie ribbon in a bow at center back, arranging back shoulder petals so they meet in center back under bow. Tack center back edges of petals to ribbon, being careful not to catch dress underneath.

DRESS TRIM
Cut the 2 smaller leaves off a satin rose tiege stem. Glue to the center front of the dress on top of ribbon. Snip 3 ribbon roses off their stems and glue to the center front of dress, on top of leaves. Cut the wire stems off 2 sets of tiege leaves, keeping them connected as 3 leaf sets Glue 1 set to each shoulder. Snip 2 ribbon roses off their stems and glue 1 to each shoulder.

HEADDRESS (for both dolls)
Cut a 16-in. piece of 1/4-in. ribbon. Snip 3 ribbon roses from stems. Glue them centered along the ribbon. Trim 2 smaller leaves from another tiege stem, and glue 1 leaf to the end of the row of 3 roses. Snip the stems from 2 roses and glue a ribbon rose on top of each leaf, so you have a row of 5 ribbon roses with a leaf at each end.

SHOES
Cut 2 pieces of ribbon 2-1/2 in. long. Turn under ends 1/4 in. and glue ribbon over straps of shoes. Cut the smaller leaves from a tiege stem. Snip 2 roses off their stems. Glue 1 leaf and 1 rose to the outer edge of each shoe.

CLUTTER COVER DOLL

ATTACHING DOLL TO FLOWERPOT
Cut off bottom of doll 3/4-in. below belly button. Turn flowerpot upside down. Position doll on center of base. Run hot glue around the base of the doll, gluing doll to base. Make sure doll stands up straight.

LINING
DRESS LINING (lining fabric): Cut 1 rectangle 10-3/4 in. high x 34-1/2 in. wide
LINING: To mark petal placement, mark a line across lining 6 in. up from bottom edge (Line A). Mark a second line 2 in. above first line (Line B). Follow instructions for short dress Step 1, sewing up 8 in. from bottom edge instead of 5 in. Run a line of gathering stitches along line B. Pull gathers in to 21 in. Wrap gathering thread ends around a pin and pin near ends, so you can adjust gathers if need be before completing dress.

DRESS
PATTERN PIECES (burgundy fabric)
   #1 Shoulder Petal-cut 4
   #2 Short Petal-cut 6
   #3 Medium Petal- Cut 6
#5 Bodice measuring strip-for reference only

PETALS
Follow instructions for short dress Step 2, making large petals also.

SHOULDER PETALS
Follow instructions for short dress, Step 3.

ATTACHING SKIRT PETALS
Place 17 large petals evenly along Line A (large petals should measure 2-in. across top edges). Adjust pleats or gathers if necessary. Topstitch in place. Zigzag across raw edges of petals, through all thicknesses, including lining. Place 13 medium petals evenly along Line B (medium petals should measure 1-5/8 in across top edges). Adjust gathers or pleats if necessary. Topstitch petals in place. Zigzag raw edges through all layers and lining. Pin 6 medium petals around top edge of lining using pattern piece #5 as a guide, matching folds of pleats with marks on pattern. Hand baste through all layers. Petals will extend beyond center back edges. Pin 6 short petals on top of medium petals according to pattern guide. Topstitch through all layers, ending stitching line at center back edges. Zigzag raw edges of petals and lining together.

DRESS FINISHING
Repeat Dress Finishing Step 5 using a 29-in. piece of ribbon instead of the 20-in. ribbon as waist tie. Adjust hem as necessary to fit flower pot.

DRESS TRIM
Cut the stems from 3 sets of tiege leaves, keeping them connected as 3 leaf sets. Glue 1 set to each shoulder and 1 set to center front dress on top of ribbon. Make a 1 1/4 in. bow with a 10 in. piece of 1/4 in. ribbon. Glue bow to center front of dress over leaves. Trim ribbon ends on an angle. Cut stems from 5 ribbon roses. Glue 3 roses to center front dress over leaves, having one at center of bow. Glue 1 rose to each shoulder over leaves. Glue 1 rose to each earlobe for earrings.
