SPECIAL STITCH: js (jump stitch): Draw up a lp in next st of previous row, below the row you are working - 2 lps
now on hook, yo and draw through both lps on hook. Do not work in the current row behind js. This will create the zigzag pattern on dress.
VEST
BACK
Starting at bottom edge of vest back with ecru crochet cotton and size 2 steel crochet hook (or size required for gauge), ch 31.
ROW 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each rem ch across (30 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROWS 2-16: Sc in each sc across (30 sc). Ch 1, turn. At end of Row 16, do not ch, turn. (Row 16 will be used again to crochet Row 18.)
ROW 17 (fringe): * (Sl st, ch 8, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next 6 chs) twice in next sc, (sl st, ch 8, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next 6 chs) in next sc; rep from * across, sl st again in last sc (45 fringes). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 18: Fold fringe over to right side. Sc into each sc across Row 16 inserting hook also through base of fringe (30 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 19: Sc in each sc across (30 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 20 (armhole shaping): Sl st in first 3 sc (for left armhole), sc in next 24 sc, sk last 3 sc (for right armhole) (24 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 21: Sk first sc, sc in next 22 sc, sl st in last sc (22 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 22: Sk first sl st, sc in each sc across (22 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROWS 23-34: Sc in each sc across (22 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 35 (shoulder shaping): Sc in first 2 sc, hdc in next 2 sc, dc in next 2 sc (6 sts). Finish off leaving a 4" end for weaving right shoulder seam, do not turn. Sk next 10 sc (for back of neck), rejoin ecru with sl st to next (11th) sc, ch 3, dc in next sc, hdc in next 2 sc, sc in last 2 sc (5 sts and 1 ch-3). Finish off leaving a 4" end for weaving left shoulder seam. Set Back aside.
LEFT FRONT
Starting at bottom edge of vest left front, ch 16.
ROW 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each rem ch across (15 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROWS 2-16: Sc in each sc across (15 sc). Ch 1, turn. At end of Row 16, do not ch, turn.
ROW 17 (fringe): *(sl st, ch 8, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next 6 chs) twice in next sc, (sl st, ch 8, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next 6 chs) in next sc; rep from * across to last sc, (sl st, ch 8, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next 6 chs) twice in last sc, sl st again in last sc (23 fringes). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 18: Fold fringe over to right side. Sc into each sc across Row 16 inserting hook also through base of fringe (15 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 19: Sc in each sc across (15 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 20 (armhole shaping): Sc in first 11 sc, sl st in next sc, sk last 3 sc (11 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 21: Sk first sl st and next sc, sc in last 10 sc (10 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 22 (Beg Neck Shaping): Sk first sc, sc in each rem sc across (9 sc).
ROWS 23-25: Sc in each sc across (9 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 26: Sk first sc, sc in each rem sc across (8 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROWS 27-29: Sc in each sc across (8 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 30: Sk first sc, sc in each rem sc across (7 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROWS 31-33: Sc in each sc across (7 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 34: Sk first sc, sc in each rem sc across (6 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 35: Sc in each sc across (6 sc). Finish off, weave in ends. Set left front aside.
RIGHT FRONT
ROWS 1-19: Rep Left Front Rows 1-19.
ROW 20 (armhole shaping): Sl st in first 4 sc, sc in last 11 sc (11 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 21: Sc in first 10 sc, sl st in last sc (10 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 22 (beg neck shaping): Sk first sl st, sc in next 9 sc, sl st in last sc (9 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 23: Sk first sl st, sc in each sc across (9 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROWS 24-25: Sc in each sc across (9 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 26: Sc in first 8 sc, sl st in last sc (8 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 27: Sk first sl st, sc in each sc across (8 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROWS 28-29: Sc in each sc across (8 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 30: Sc in first 7 sc, sl st in last sc (7 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 31: Sk first sl st, sc in each sc across (7 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROWS 32-33: Sc in each sc across (7 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 34: Sc in first 6 sc, sl st in last sc (6 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 35: Sk first sl st, sc in each sc across (6 sc). Finish off, weave in ends.
VEST FINISHING
STEP 1: Thread a 3" end from Vest Back Row 35 into tapestry needle and, with wrong sides tog, weave (or sew) back shoulder to front shoulder matching sts. Rep for other shoulder. Weave in ends.
STEP 2: Using a 9" piece of ecru and tapestry needle, weave (or sew) vest side seams from underarm to bottom edge, matching row ends. Weave in ends.
STEP 3: Sew multi-colored giant seed beads to vest fronts just above fringe as shown in Fig. 1 (varying colors and matching color pattern on both sides).
STEP 4: Place vest on doll with opening in front.
PANTS (make 2)
Starting at center back of waist edge, ch 30.
ROW 1 (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 13 chs, work fringe (to work fringe: ch 8, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next 6 ch), sc in last 15 chs (29 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 2-5: Sc in first 14 sc, work fringe as before, fold fringe from previous row to the right side and sc in base of that previous fringe, keeping fringe on right side, sc in last 14 sc (29 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 6: Work 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 13 sc, work fringe, fold fringe from previous row to right side and sc in base of that previous fringe, keeping fringe on right side, sc in next 13 sc, 2 sc in last sc (31 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROWS 7-19: Sc in first 15 sc, work fringe, fold previous fringe to right side and sc into base, sc in last 15 sc (31 sc). Ch 1, turn. At end of Row 19, ch 6 (in place of ch 1 – for crotch), turn.
ROW 20: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 4 chs across crotch, sc in next 15 sc, work fringe, fold previous fringe to right side and sc into base, sc in last 15 sc (36 sc). Ch 6, turn.
ROW 21: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 4 chs across crotch, sc in next 15 sc, work fringe, fold previous fringe to right side and sc into base, sc in last 20 sc (41 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROWS 22-42: Sc in first 20 sc, work fringe, fold previous fringe to right side and sc into base, sc in last 20 sc (41 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 43: Dec over first 2 sc (to dec: draw up a lp in next 2 sts – 3 lps now on hook, yo and draw through all 3 lps on hook), sc in
next 18 sc, work fringe, fold previous fringe to right side and sc into base, sc in next 18 sc, dec over last 2 sc (39 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROWS 44-57: Sc in first 19 sc, work fringe, fold previous fringe to right side and sc into base, sc in last 19 sc (39 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 58: Dec over first 2 sc, sc in next 17 sc, work fringe, fold previous fringe to right side and sc into base, sc in next 17 sc, dec over last 2 sc (37 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROWS 59-71: Sc in first 18 sc, work fringe, fold previous fringe to right side and sc into base, sc in last 18 sc, (37 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 72: Dec over first 2 sc, sc in next 16 sc, work fringe, fold previous fringe to right side and sc into base, sc in next 16 sc, dec over last 2 sc (35 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROWS 73-77: Sc in first 17 sc, work fringe, fold previous fringe to right side and sc into base, sc in last 17 sc (35 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROW 78: Sc in first 17 sc, do not work fringe, fold previous fringe to right side and sc into base, sc in last 17 sc (35 sc). Finish off leaving a 25" end (for sewing seams closed).
PANTS FINISHING
STEP 1: Using tapestry needle and 25" end from bottom of pants leg, weave (or sew) one inside pants leg seam (matching row ends) up to crotch. Finish off, do not cut yarn. Rep for other leg.
STEP 2: Match center point of crotch from both legs. Using one rem ecru end, sew from center crotch up to waist, matching sts and row ends (for pants front). Finish off, weave in ends. Using other rem ecru end, sew from center crotch toward pants back and up center back seam about 1", leaving rem 1" open. Finish off, weave in ends.
STEP 3: Place pants on doll with opening to the back. Overlap left back over right back so waist fits. Place markers for hook and eye just below waist. Remove pants and sew hook and eye where marked. Remove markers.
FRONT LOINCLOTH
With back waist edge of pants facing you, sk first 5 chs on pants front to left of right-hand fringe, join ecru to next ch, ch 1.
ROW 1 (right side): Sc in same ch as joining and next 8 chs. Skipping over center seam, sc in next 9 chs, sk last 5 chs on pants front (18 sc). Ch 1, turn.
ROWS 2-23: Sc in each sc across (18 sc). Ch 1, turn. At end of Row 23, do not ch, finish off, weave in ends.
LOINCLOTH FINISHING
STEP 1 (fringe): Holding pants upside down with right side of loincloth facing you, join ecru to first sc at bottom right edge of loincloth, ch 6. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next 4 chs, (sl st, ch 6, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next 4 chs) in each rem sc across bottom edge, sl st again in last sc (18 fringes). Finish off, weave in ends.
STEP 2: Place pants on doll and close back opening.
MOCCASINS (make 2)
Starting along center of sole, ch 12.
RND 1 (right side): Work 5 dc in 3rd ch from hook (leaving a beg ch-2) (toe end), dc in next 8 chs, 5 dc in last ch (heel). Working around opposite side of starting ch, dc in next 8 chs, join with sl st to top of beg ch-2 (26 dc – not counting beg ch-2). Ch 1, do not turn.
RND 2: Work * (2 sc in next dc) 4 times, sc in next 9 dc; rep from * once more, join to first sc (34 sc). Ch 1, do not turn.
RND 3 Sc in same sc as joining and rem sc around, join (34 sc). Ch 1, do not turn.
RND 4: Working in back of sts for this rnd only (front lps rem unworked – for edge of sole), sc in same sc as joining and each rem sc around, join (34 sc). Ch 1, do not turn.
RND 5: Sc in same sc as joining and each rem sc around, join (34 sc). Ch 1, do not turn.
RND 6: Sc in same sc as joining, dec over next 2 sc, sc in next 4 sc, dec over next 2 sc, sc in each rem sc around, join (32 sc). Ch 1, do not turn.
RND 7: Sc in same sc as joining, dec over next 2 sc, sc in next 2 sc, dec over next 2 sc, sc in each rem sc around, join (30 sc). Ch 1, do not turn.
RND 8: Sc in same sc as joining, (dec over next 2 sc) twice, sc in each rem sc around, join (28 sc). Ch 1, do not turn.
RND 9: Sc in same sc as joining, sk next sc, 2 dc in next sc, sk next 2 sc, sc in each rem sc around, join (26 sts). Ch 3, do not turn.
RND 10: Dc in same sc as joining and each rem st around, join to top of beg ch-3 (26 dc – not counting beg ch-3). Ch 3, do not turn.
RND 11: Dc in each dc around, join (26 dc). Ch 1, turn.
CUFF
RND 12 (right side): Working in back lp of sts for this rnd only (front lps rem unworked – for top edge of moccasin), sc in each dc around, join to first sc (26 sc). Ch 1, do not turn.
RNDS 13-15: Sc in same sc as joining and each rem sc around, join (26 sc). Ch 1, do not turn. At end of Rnd 15, finish off, weave in ends.
RNDS 3-8: Hdc in each hdc around, join (50 hdc). Ch 2, do not turn.
MOCCASINS FINISHING
STEP 1: Sew 7 different colored giant seed beads to top of each moccasin front (matching color pattern on both moccasins) as shown in Fig. 2.
STEP 2: Fold cuff over to right side and place moccasins on doll’s feet inside pant leg.
NECKLACE
Using a 20-in. length of cord, follow Fig. 3 to string beads.
ARMBAND
Using a 16-in. length of cord, follow Fig. 4 to string beads.
HEADDRESS
STEP 1: Cut two 4-1/2-in. pieces of 1/4-in. black satin ribbon. Hot glue 1 end of each piece of black ribbon to each end of 8” decorative braid. Trim ends of black ribbon on an angle.
STEP 2: Cut off ends of all 29 feathers. Hot glue feathers to back of ribbon and decorative trim (alternating colors) evenly spaced, placing them from small to large, down to small again.
STEP 3: Place center of headdress at doll’s forehead. Wrap towards back of head and glue trim together with small dot of hot glue.
